You've signed the lease on your new apartment in Los Angeles, and now the work really begins. Moving can be one of the most stressful of life's events, but there are steps you can take to alleviate the pain of the process.

Start planning 6-8 weeks before your planned moving day to Los Angeles. Make an inventory of your possessions, and have a garage sale, dispose of or donate items you don't want to move. Start packing now! Begin with the little-used items in your attic and garage. Notify magazine and newspaper subscriptions and submit a change of address with the post office. Contact utility companies, and don't forget to ask about the return of deposits. If you are moving to a new town, get copies of you and your pets' medical records, prescription information and your child's school records.

Ask friends, co-workers, even the staff at your new apartment community, for moving companies with good reputations. Call the local Los Angeles Better Business Bureau to check the reputation of movers you are considering. Get more than one estimate and be sure each option is priced out, so you can pick and choose which are more cost-efficient for you.

Be aware of the different insurance options offered by most movers. Basic liability is usually covered under your contract, but doesn't generally cover full repair or replacement of damaged items. Standard protection, or depreciated value, covers a damaged item at purchase price less depreciation - also often not enough to replace many items. Only full value coverage provides comprehensive protection for the full replacement of damaged possessions.

Packing Yourself

Disassemble furniture as much as possible and cover well. Bundle and wrap legs and pieces separately. This will make for easier loading and help minimize damage. Pad everything! Lay tables upside down and nest chairs seat-to-seat.

Carefully label each box - its contents as well as the room it should be offloaded to. Keep an inventory of all your boxes, listed by room.

When packing china, individually wrap each piece in several sheets of paper, then bundle every five or six pieces in a thick layer of paper. Cushion the bottom of your carton and surround each of your bundles with crushed paper, placing flat, heavier pieces on the bottom. Wrap cups and glassware in several layers of paper and place upside down in the top layer of the carton, with handles all facing the same direction.

Leave lightweight clothing in dresser drawers, and purchase special wardrobe boxes for hanging garments. Cushion shoes to avoid damage from sharp heels, and pack shoes at the top of boxes to avoid crushing.

Certain items should not be packed into the moving van. Items like cleaning and painting solvents, aerosol cans, propane tanks and automobile batteries can combust in the heat inside a moving van, so dispose of them or carry them in the air conditioned compartment of your car. For the same reasons, drain all the gas and oil from any motorized equipment you are moving.

Carry jewelry and important documents yourself.

The Big Day

Pack a survival kit to get you through the first day and night in your new apartment in Los Angeles. Include a change of clothes, toiletries and medications. A picnic dinner is not a bad idea. It'll make you feel more at home than fast food, and don't forget a bottle of bubbly and a glass or two to christen your new home with a toast!
